Code of Conduct

GIJN is committed to providing a welcoming and harassment-free environment for participants of all races, gender, sexual orientations, physical abilities, physical appearances, and beliefs. We believe a clear code builds a respectful and safe community space.

All #GIJC21 participants agree to:

– Be considerate in speech and actions, and actively seek to acknowledge and respect the boundaries of fellow attendees.

– Refrain from demeaning, discriminatory, or harassing behavior and speech.

– Harassment includes, but is not limited to:

  • Deliberate intimidation
  • Stalking
  • Sustained or willful disruption of talks or other events
  • Inappropriate physical contact
  • Use of sexual or discriminatory imagery (unless included in a session and approved by GIJN staff), comments, or jokes; and unwelcome sexual attention.
  • The deliberate outing of a person’s identity without their consent or purposely misgendering.

Alert a member of the conference team if you notice a dangerous situation, someone in distress, or violations of this code of conduct, even if they seem inconsequential.

GIJN may take any lawful action it deems appropriate if any attendee engages in harassing behavior, including but not limited to warning the offender, asking the offender to leave the conference, or banning the offender from all GIJN events.

If you feel you have been unfairly accused of violating this code of conduct, you should contact the event team with a concise description of your grievance; any grievances filed will be considered by the GIJN team.

The Code of Conduct Team will:

Work to diffuse the situation | After we receive an initial complaint we will do everything we can to immediately diffuse the situation and make sure the complainant is safe.

Start a review process | Once the situation is stabilized the Code of Conduct team will quickly begin a review process of the situation.

Determine course of action | After considering all factors, the Code of Conduct Team will decide on a course of action. Violators of the code of conduct may be subject to one of the following actions:

– Denied funding and support;

– Removal from session, event, or conference;

– Banned as a participant from future events.

The team will consider the safety and confidentiality of the reporting individual with the hope of preventing any further harm. The identity of the complainant will not be identified without their consent.

This code of conduct covers all GIJN events whether in person or online.
