South Africa

Alastair Otter started out as a journalist more than 20 years ago in South Africa. Based in Johannesburg, he worked for a number of South Africa’s largest print newspapers before moving online to write about technology and business. He founded and ran Tectonic, an online publication covering open source software, for close to ten years. Most recently he was editor of IOL, a top South African news site. Over the past five years he has increasingly focused on data journalism and, in particular, data visualization, publishing a number of interactive pieces through the Media Hack Collective, and Passmark, an education-focused data journalism project.
