John "JSR" Scott-Railton is a Senior Researcher at The Citizen Lab. His work focuses on technological threats civil society, including targeted hacking and disinformation.
His work includes collaborative investigations of abuses of NSO Group’s notorious Pegasus spyware, and the global surveillance marketplace.
Other investigations include tracking mercenary hacking groups targeting investigative reporters, hack-and-leak operations by Russia, and other government-sponsored operations targeting journalists worldwide.
John has also tracked disinformation operations targeting the 2020 presidential election, and investigated the January 6th insurrection in Washington DC.
Recently, John was a fellow at Google Ideas and Jigsaw at Alphabet. Scott-Railton has studied at the University of Chicago, University of Michigan, and UCLA. Previously he founded The Voices Projects, collaborative information feeds that bypassed internet shutdowns in Libya and Egypt.
